The fact that a part
of the municipality’s territory is included into the area of the
Narwiański National Park and in consequence is characterised by great
natural value decide about the popularity of this region. The
municipality covers a part of the backwaters of the Narew River
protected by the park, which are unique phenomena on European scale
and are located on the border of the municipalities of Sokoły and
Choroszcz. This is the place where Narew creates numerous arms and
offshoots characterised by a high degree of naturalness and organised
in a complex network. One can also find a vast marsh ecosystem with
rare flora and fauna elements here, which occupies the whole bottom of
the valley. The bushes, which serve as a hatching refuge of
international importance, offer shelter for over 150 species of water
fowl. An important issue is the problem of preserving the natural
values of the environment, which has not been polluted by industrial
and city waste yet. That is why, the authorities of the municipality
take active steps aimed at ecology. One of the problems worth
mentioning due to its rapid improvement is the issue of managing farm
sewage, which is being solved by the construction of a sewage system
as well as collective and private household sewage plants. An
important thing is that the municipality tries to raise ecological
awareness of its residents. That is why, in the years 2005-2008 there
will be an educational project carried out prepared especially for the
inhabitants of Kobylin Borzymy concerning the management of waist. The
priceless nature of that area encourages tourist activities,
especially those connected with landscapes. The river’s section
located within the borders of the national park is available for
fishing; one of the ways of making our stay more pleasant might be a
trip by a punt boat; it is also possible to hire a boat or a canoe.
Moreover, Kobylin
Borzymy is worth attention because of the village’s layout: the
streets represent the 15th century type of settlement It is also worth
visiting a few buildings for their architecture: a church of St.
Stanisław, the Bishop and Martyr built in a new gothic style, a
Roman-Catholic cemetery and a graveyard chapel from the year 1862.
In the capital of
the municipality one can find buildings and sites of public use. One
of the most popular periodic celebrations that take place in the
municipality is ‘The Honey Festival’ (“Biesiada Miodowa”) organised
annually on the first Sunday of September in the village of Kurowo.
During these celebrations over a dozen of apiaries from Podlasie have
a chance to present their work. It is also a great opportunity to try
all varieties of honey, have a look at and buy chosen nectars, candles
made of bee wax and health remedies from Propolis. In Kurowo, next to
the backwaters of the Narew River, one can find a well-kept gentry
manor from the 19th century. Its tradition is not combined with a
history of one particular family – over the years the Kurowo estate
had many owners. The manor complex includes an old habitable building,
a historic annex and a park consisting of six lodgings set apart by
lime ails. Behind a wall separating the official part from the
administrative one, there is also a smithy, a stable, a building for
carriages and a barn. Since 1988 the Kurowo estate is the residence
and the property of the board of the Narwiański National Park. Next to
the manor there are a few protected camping sites situated as well as
a wind shelter and a place especially prepared for a bonfire. A
viewing tower located in the vicinity offers a perfect observational
point for watching and photographing of the beautiful green and blue
panorama of the Narew. Deep down among the backwaters of Narew,
between Kurowo and Waniewo, there are the ruins of an old ground
fortification. It is an earthwork built about 1521 called by the
inhabitants ‘Koziołkiem’. Its main task was to guard the safety of the
passage through the Narew. After performing its function during the
Swedish Deluge it outlived its usefulness and was abandoned. Nowadays,
the fortification can be reached by boat or on foot from the side of
the Kurówka River but only when the level of the water is low.
